My macbooks fans go crazy with just a text editor and chrome open! I have 4gigs of ram.
I also saw that there is mysqld in my activity monitor. do i need it? if not, how do i stop it?

I'd do a clean install. I might be mistaken, but, MySQL does not come with Yosemite. So, either you have a Mac you bought from someone else and who knows what is also installed on it, or you downloaded from a torrent site, which might contain malware, which brings us back to who knows what else is installed on there and what it's doing.

Some nice instructions for a clean install:

So, maybe don't have to do a clean install.

And lesson learned: know what that piece of software one is putting on their machine actually does, so, you might be able to back out.
