i new to macs and i know the old way was something like apple/cntrl/spacebar 3 or something like that. when i try this now spotlight comes down and thats it. i know there has to be an easy answer but i cant figure it out. help!

Cmd+Shift+3.

edit: An easier way of finding stuff out is to go to system prefs/keyboard and mouse/keyboard shortcuts.

thanks guys but all it does is make a little noise, where does this file go? i dont even know if its saving it or not. istn the curser supposed to change or something??

spotlight: grab
The app you find of that name will also take pics (in many different ways)
really, this kinda stuff is in finder>help>mac help
It is also in many on-line resources, including apple.
There is also a widget here that has a lot of cool features, and is free.
Really, this stuff is basic! Try help next time first! 🙂

apple-shift-3 goes to desktop as far as i know, else search in spotlight for images, and sort by date (type in "find:images", press enter and sort by date.
Jeez man, use the help! Look on the apple site!
