How Do I Use Gmail in Mac Mail Lion without downloading 15 thousand emails?

I've been trying for the last couple hours following various protocols and not succeeding. Any thoughts?

If you have an IMAP account, you can't.

If you have IMAP be sure to log into your Gmail account in your browser. Under Settings > Labels be sure you don't check "All Mail" to show.

You can also remove IMAP and/or [Gmail]/ from folder names and the contents won't be visible in your email client.

FWIW, I found using Gmail over IMAP slow and irritating, and went running back to the web interface fairly quickly....
