iPod touch How do I . . . ???

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, or has been covered numerous times: I did a search, and couldn't find it.

How do I download an app (or song) on itunes (on my Macbook), and have it automatically show up on my iPhone or iPod touch?

Found numerous sites on Google explaining this. All I did was search "automatic downloads" on Google.

Apparently 'automatic' was the word I was missing.
