How do make sure Apps are.......

Hi All,
How do I know that a app is closed so I am not using unnecessary data?
I am changing data plans.

Sorry if this has already been addressed. I am new to the world of forums.

double click home button to bring up multitasking tray. Hold your finger on one of them till they start wiggling and you see a red circle on them.

press the red circle on every app you want closed

Apps don't usually use data in the background anyway, unless it's something that's streaming media such as Pandora.

There are only a few types of apps that can run in the background...

Streaming audio, GSP or location services, AirPlay, or VoIP.
