For most (apps and folders, for example) you change the icon of the item itself the normal cut and paste way, and then drag the altered icon onto the Dock, in place of the old one.
Some icons can't be changed that easily though Finder and Trash are two that require either some behind the scenes replacing of files, or the use of an app like CandyBar. This makes changing the icon easier and safer, but the app isn't free.
Hi, I think this may have happened to me too... I might have misunderstood your problem, but if I haven't: try right-clicking on the folder icon on the dock. Check to see if it is set to "Display As: Folder". If it's set to "Display As Stack" (which seems to be the default), change it to "Display as: Folder".
Hope this helps
Sorry, if this is a bit old hat but I cannot stand the HP printer folder icon on my Dock. I have tried to replace it the usual way (Get Info, Cut & Paste) but it wouldn't work. I have all the rights and the folder is a folder, not a stack. Does anyone know why? Thanks.

When I open the "get info" window, the icon in the upper left hand corner is not the image I want to set as the new icon. Instead a default "preview" image with the file type suffix appears. I downloaded the set online and they are all .png files. I've attached a screenshot of what I mean. Please help me if anybody knows how to fix this.
Thanks

I'm not sure what you're doing different, or what's different about your setup, but using the instructions I posted, I can change the icons for all apps, including Finder and iTunes. For example, here's my iTunes icon:Guys I have noticed that... the apps I added to docks ... I can change the icons to them.....
But the ones like finder, i tunes, ..... the system apps... I cannot change their icons....
I tried to set the permissions to these... but still no luck![]()
That's not the procedure. Go back to the link in post #38 and follow it exactly. It will work.I
METHOD I'M USNG :
1. Download icon.... *.png format...save on desktop
2.Right clik .... on New_icon.png.....Get info....<edit> copy
3. Right clik on..... Old_icon.png...Get info ....<edit> paste

As u can see dear .... I have been able to change few icons...
which means I'm doign it right...
But I will follow #38 and hopefully it will work for the "stubborn" icons as well
I kept thinking it was more of a 'permissions' issue
Also, don't right-click on the .png file. Double-click to open it in Preview and Cmd-C.
Right-click on the app you're trying to change and Get Info. Post a screen shot of that window, showing the Sharing & Permissions information. Are you logged in on an administrator account?Honestly... and Im not being stubborn or anything...
This method is not working for some icons ;(
The screen flashes and i hear a sound...MAC way of telling me ....that .... this is not happening... lolxxx
