How do you avoid cellular data charges while traveling internationally?

Obviously, it' s nice to have a pmp while traveling. How do you prevent the iPhone from racking up unintended data charges?

Turn off Data Roaming. Chances are, it's already off.

airplane mode - on
wireless - on (if you want)
data roaming off

Turn on airplane mode, turn on wireless, then find a wireless signal and use skype to make calls or just surf, depending on what you want to do.
