How do you check the SMART status of a USB external HDD?

One question. Did you have to reboot to get this to work? I just installed it and it doesn't work on SL 10.6.8.

Answer: Rebooting solved the problem.

Take the drive out of the enclosure if you can, install it internally and boot via the Snow Leopard DVD. Then it's at the bottom in Disk Util.

Or you just assume that it's broken, as there seems to be a problem with it. Hard drives fail.

Many USB controllers in drive enclosures don't pass through smart data. Its not an OS thing in that case.
