Might be a dumb question. I have VLC to play movies. Is there anyway to copy movies, other than through iTunes to the iPad? Like drag and drop?

Well.. you use iTunes, but you don't have to put them in your iTunes library.

Go to the "apps" tab when your iPad is accessing iTunes.

Scroll down to the bottom and you can see all the apps that you can drag and drop files into. VLC player should be there.

Be sure they are the correct file type also. There are a few 3rd party media players oplayer & Goodplayer come too mind.

Use handbrake if you need to convert.

& then yeah just drag & drop into iTunes & then sync.
