How do you disable Skype, Mail, and other apps from opening on startup?

I'm tired of being bombarded with applications upon startup. Does anybody know how I can disable these applications from opening on startup?

Go to System Preferences --> Users & Groups --> Select your profile --> then choose Login Items.

From there, remove any application you don't want to start when you log on.
