I once heard an expert say not to turn on the TV because it can actually keep you awake.

He suggested reading a book or listening to music.

Watching TV or going online isn't such a good idea - keeps the brain working so less likely that you will fall asleep.

The best thing really is to turn the light off and close your eyes and think happy thoughts. You'll drop off soon enough - a bath, a milky drink and the scent of lavender might help too

Watching TV isn't very good to help you sleep. It's too active.
I listen to audiobooks on my Powerbook, with iSleep set to 120 minutes. I also sleep with one leg under and one over the covers.

Coincidentally, I also had a terrible time sleeping last night. I went to bed at 1:30 AM and was up until 5:00 AM. At that time, I decided to make a desperation move: I grabbed my giant teddy bear into bed.

It saved my night.

I guess do whatever works.

I have to say, though, that I think listening to the TV is a horrible idea. That's a lot of chatter, manipulation, and bad news to have running through your subconscious. I mean, you don't have to believe in magic crystals and all blend of new age concepts to realize we are very suggestable as we drift into sandland.

There are many ways to calm your nervous system and learn to fall asleep. Guided imagery, self-hypnosis, relaxation techniques... check this one out:

Actually, one thing that is strange is that I can be reading a book, and can't keep my eyes open, and then I switch the light off, and my brain switches back on, and I'm wide awake. I switch the light back on again, and read another few pages, and nearly fall asleep, and switch the light off, and the same thing happens...

I watch replays of 'breakfast with frost'

On a more serious note, get Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada, or Unlimited Ambient by Brian Eno/Harld Budd etc...

Either one will do, and those are the two albums that send me off to sleep instantly...

where can i get this and what exactly is melatonin?

If I'm not too much mistaken, melatonin is the hormone found in the body which causes 'sleepiness'. It is the hormone which causes you to sleep. However, if you have an excess it can cause fatigue, and excessive tiredness for a long period of time, so obviously taking too much the night before could affect you the next day...

Should be fine though, as long as theyre not used very frequently

Cheers

I have trouble sleeping these days. Sometimes listeing to Pink Floyd works. Somethings listening to Coast to Coast AM (Radio show) works. Other times I force myself to stay awake watching a little tv and I fall asleep. A good thing to do is excersize at least one hour everyday. Normally helps.

I just find stayin up till 4/5 in the morning on the web or PS2 till feelin tired, then go to bed witha fan on and waking up at 12/1 in the afternoon....

Thats whats got me through the summer hols so far...lol :p

Cheers

watch the movie 'you, me, and dupree' - trust me.. you'll be snoozing in no time
hahahahaha, yea it wasn't that great
I turn the TV on which sometimes works but sometimes doesn't cause then i find something interesting and i stay up watching it

The best way I have found for myself, has been to visualize an up comming project that I have to work on in my head, (ie: building a mialbox, new windows to install, new counter top ect.) and working through all the aspects of that project, to try and ferrett out any unforseen problems, or easier ways to takle something ect. May sound odd, but engaging my brain to do other things, besides getting p.o'd because I can't get to sleep seems to help

TV usually keeps me awake. What I usually do is splash cold water on my face to become totally awake, then try to go to sleep again. For example, the other night I went to bed at midnight and lay for an hour, not sleeping, but not totally awake. So I went, walked around, slashed water on my face, woke up totally, went back to bed, read, and fell right asleep. I can't sleep without reading first, I've done it ever since I learned to read and I can't do without it now. If all else fails, a few shots of whatever I have hidden in my closet at the moment, but that has only hapened once, and you have to be careful not to drink too much or else you will have a very rough time waking up. Just enough to make you sleepy.
