I'm not from the US, but as far as I can tell you won't have much luck in the US. The iPhone will be tied to US operator AT&T from the factory and you will have to jailbreak it in order to use it with another operator.

You can buy it factory unlocked in Australia, Italy and Belgium I believe... I just bought one on eBay from Australia and it came out at about 605 EUR or $850 USD for the 16Gb model.

I can hook you up with one from Hong Kong as I live there :) And no I'm not some chinese scam artist, just a British dude living/working here. They sell them unlocked on the HK Apple Store online, and in the many authorized resellers here, but *I think* warrantees on iPhones only cover the country in which they are bought, i.e. you would have to send back to HK if anything went wrong.

hker ^

im interested.
can you send me a PM? i tried to send you one but the system says you have disabled receiving PM's.

steve.

That's strange, I can't see any option to enable the PM system; maybe it is because I'm a new member?

I'm interested too, been looking for an factory unlocked iPhone for weeks. I'm moving from the UK to the USA in February, so I'm needing an iPhone that woods here and there and was told factory unlocked ones were the best way to go.

I finally bought my factory unlocked iPhone. I got the 32GB because I just couldn't pass it up for the price.. I called them and asked them about their Factory Unlocked iPhones, and I am able to upgrade and connect it to itunes without it ever trying to lock up on me.. I absolutely love it! They have the 16GB and the 32GB in both Black and White..

3rd world

I don't who can I order from to get the black FACTORY UNLOCKED 8gb or 16gb iPhone 3G. I don't mind burning up to $1000 USD to get one but I need to know where is a reputable place to order one. I mean If I have to make a planned vacation to visit Hong Kong I might just do that.

on your way to HK you may have to make a stop or two
i was just on a photoshoot in south africa and lemme tell you in places where you got to make stuff work that does not, they do and you can get anything done to any phone
but you might also get ripped off
do some digging
its a big internet
cheers

Apple stores in the 3rd world do exist

No need to be "ripped off" here in South Africa: Apple stores sell iPhones factory unlocked. Like in Europe, anti-competitive legislation deemed that it's illegal to "lock" a phone exclusively to only one network.

I ordered a factory unlocked 32 GB iPhone 4 from HamzaTech

Saw http://www.Hamzatech.com's ad on craigslist for factory unlocked iPhone. Ordered it even though I'd never heard of them before. I thought it would arrive in 2-3 days, but it took 4 days to arrive.

Aside from the slow (but FREE) delivery by http://www.HamzaTech.com, I was happy with the product itself. As advertised, the phone was brand new and under factory warranty and was actually UNLOCKED and fully functional. I'm now happily using it on T-Mobile and finally have an all you can eat data plan. Just keep in mind that they only offer free delivery and it's slower than 2nd day air. I'd have gladly paid for the option to have 2nd day air, but they don't have that option at all :(
