How do you get contacts into iCloud?

So I successfully loaded my wife's google contacts by using an Exchange acct on the ip5 and she has an iCloud acct set up and in the settings page, iCloud is turned on and Contacts is turned on. My question is, how do I actually get the system to take the contacts and store them in the cloud? I logged into www.icloud.com and it doesn't show the contacts there although it does show the calendar is in the cloud. Can someone help? 😕
