I was reading something about the Droid being able to get free text messages. is the iPhone 3GS able to do the same?

I get free text messages on o2 with my iPhone when I top up £15 or more.
Same would apply for any other phone.

Alternatively, free Wi-Fi + e-mail = free messages (to some extent)

Please provide source of where you read this, as a single phone cannot somehow allow free messages. It still has to go through the carrier.

i guess the obvious (but the pro version cost $5.99 but unlimited)
i use: TextFree Unlimited they have a lite but i never used it.....

it seems to work great.... (but i'm not one to text 100 times a day)

there's also textnow unlimited its $4.99 forever not a one year subscription like textfree. I think textnow is a bit better myself, i have both.

Google Voice does allow you to sms people. Works on *most* any phone with a half decent web browser.
It is possible that are talking about google chat, but I've no idea since I don't have a andriod phone.

AT&T also has an SMS portal on their site to allow you to send SMS to its customers.

That is all I'm aware of outside various apps.
