Right click on one, select 'show icons'.

I've tried CMDclick, OptionClick, CntlClick, and a two-fingered click on my laptop's trackpad, not getting that popup.

On my iPad I went to Settiings > Show Icons in Favorites Bar, clicked the feature off and that worked fine; no such similar feature in Sonoma.

Weird, I’m on Sonoma and see “show icons” in the menu pop-up when I two-finger click anywhere in the favorites bar of Safari.

I figured it out. I had been clicking on the icon itself, which took me to that website; I had to click on the Favorites bar area "between" the sites. Thanks folks!
