How do you hide your phone number on iMessage?

I was talking to my friend and her phone number went from using it in iMessage to showing only her email address.

I'm confused with iMessage too. Instead of my friends name showing up it was his phone number but yet my name shows up in his messages.

Settings > Messages > Receive At > Caller ID > you can pick what you want to show up here.

There's no way to hide one's phone number in iMessages. What you could do though is register an email address with iMessage and use it as your caller ID. Here's how:

Settings > Messages > Receive At > Add Email

Once added, go to 'Called ID' and select your newly registered email address.

Voilà!
