I was going to buy a Kindle DX strictly as an eBook reader, which has the same size screen, for $2 less.

I wanted an eReader for a while and just graduated college a few weeks ago and saw myself reading more now that I had time. The iPad was really just good timing as it was 500 bucks (for the model I got) and that's only 200-250 more than most good models of single function eReaders. The iPad did enough extra that it was worth the money. I travel a bit (not a ton but more than the average college student) and if i'm going somewhere for a weekend then it's great for that. Wish AIM notifications were instant but if i NEED AIM I can always sign on and stay on that screen during the convo then leave.
With the introduction over the past 2 or 3 days of B&N's app as well as the Kindle app and iBooks it gives me the freedom to compare prices and get my books at the best available price as well as do other stuff when I want to take a break from reading....that makes it well worth the extra 200 bucks
Initially I thought it was going to be a flop....wasn't even impressed the first time I played with it. But then again, I don't have an iPhone (droid) or iPod Touch so saying "it's just a big iPod touch" to me doesn't work well. I just reply with "I don't have one of those so why would I pay for something to do this with a MUCH smaller screen..."
