I use it for work (self employed) so the price was not a major factor.

Having owned a 15" and a 13" MBP I went for the 15" for the 4-core CPU and the bigger screen. Found the 13" to be a bit weak for Visual Studio work. Had a 1 TB SSD now went for 2 TB, an expensive option but more flexible than relying on USB discs or the cloud.

I have owned a long list of IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads (e.g. T4x0) and is a Mac owner since 6 years. Overall I think the lifetime costs of the MBP is lower: they last longer, less effort in having to set them up and maintain them.

As a result I can focus on my business not fiddling with the computer.

Which one would you guys get for recreational use? Like just using it for web browsing, emails, messaging, etc. Ideally it would be the nTB, but the only reason why I'm torn is because of the long term aspect therefore wanting to get the TB model.

If it helps at all, you can get $100 off with the education discount. Personally I got the TB and I think its the better choice.

People think you're paying $300 extra from the touch bar, but in reality it also comes with better internals and two more thunderbolt 3 ports. Just something to think about.

I just buy what I need. If I have to "justify"; i.e., make an excuse to myself for something it's no longer a need but a want.

I only bought the entry 15" b/c it was all I needed. Yes, I sold my old MBP b/c I don't need 2 laptops.

The question:
"How do you justify the cost of the 2016 MBP?"

My answer:
I couldn't.
So... I bought a 2015 model instead, at a price $300+ lower than Apple's.
Quite happy with it!

You have to decide if you're ok with being a beta tester, and getting ripped off at the same time.

If yes, no problem.

If no, buy something else.

The SW industry has for some time now been using agile development methodology, based on:
- frequent internal releases, often every two weeks
- continuous integration
- high amount of test automation

The drawback is often less manual, high level testing, which was typical for the old "Big Bang" integrations with long time between releases.

Frequent releases with resulting smaller changes reduced the risks but with a step change like the new hardware bugs are bound to appear, especially with edge cases (looking at you CR).

This is not a Apple unique thing, you see the same approach from Microsoft or Adobe just to name a few.

My impression is that Apple is tight lipped about what the are doing, but they do listen and respond to bug reports you file. I am sure the current issues have the highest priority within Apple.

I bought the baseline 13" touchbar model. How did I justify the price? Simple, really. I needed a new computer, and Apple's offering met my needs perfectly, so I bought it. Obviously it's a lot of money, but considering I'm on this thing every day, the price, when spread out over (hopefully) at least five years will not be that high.

My 2010 MBP lasted almost seven years, so my expectations are pretty high with the new one as well. I'll probably end up getting some money for the old machine as well, so all is good.

Apple has gotten greedy. MacBook Pro 13" for $1500 and $2400 for MacBook Pro 15" are insane.

Timmy checked his bank account and found it a little bit empty.

Same here. The prices of all configs of the 2016 15" makes the refurb 2015 a steal. I bought a fully maxed out 15" from the refurb store minutes after the benchmarks of the 2016 models were out.

Everyone has a right to an opinion of course. BUT... what makes you an expert to say the pricing is insane? What is this based on? From recent posts I realize you're a student. I'm guessing you've never purchased a MBP with your own money, nor have you had regular employment to be able to. You don't seem to understand regular for-profit business either, because everything is "Timmy's" fault. I'm having difficulty being convinced that you understand value or ROI of a computer.

Not suggesting you don't have a right to post, but why don't you post about things you do understand and experiences you do know about. Making these statements on a post about justifying a purchase with one's own money is ironic coming from you. No doubt these MBP's are expensive, no argument from anyone here. Whether they can be justified has a direct correlation with income (or access to cash) and/or payback for work related reasons, both of which you don't know anything about. You are just repeating the usual soundbites. Sorry, just had to comment.

o_O
For that kind of purpose, I'd just get the simplest, cheapest machine really. But do you really want to get a Pro? I'd say an Air is fine.

For those things then get an iPad and case with keyboard! Why even need a pro!

On one side of your brain is the voice telling you its a rip-off and to wait for something better

On the other side of your brain is the voice telling you that you really want it

So then you close your eyes and ask yourself, "what would the 5 year old you do?"

So then the next day you go out and buy it anyway.

^ This explains why I own so many Macs and iPads.

I agree to a point with what you've said and I'll take a little less passive aggressive stab at responding to it than some will..

Apple answers to their stock holders and the stock holders demand profits.. Most are well aware of the so called Apple tax that we have to pay for Apple products. They are generally more expensive than their counterparts from a price to spec comparison..

I agree the Apple tax is high but I choose to pay it. It's getting higher and higher and if it continues, I may need to reevaluate my stance on the matter..

However, comparing the base 2015 to a base 2016 shows no price increase at all as I previously posted:

2015 MacBook Pro base with 256GB SSD = $1499
2016 MacBook Pro base with 256GB SSD = $1499

Oh, so just because I am a student, you think that I don't have a job and things are just given to me? You're pathetic.

I guess it would never have crossed your mind that I paid for it with my own money.

I am from rural part of the country with no Apple Store or AASP.

If one needs a Mac, an iPad ,or an iPhone repaired, it has to be brought to me or sent out to Apple. (There's a mobile phone store that does iPhone display replacement, but that doesn't count.)

In my work, I was successful.

Also, MacBook Pro 13" and MacBook Pro 15" used to cost $1199 and $1799 respectively.

Sure, that was before the MacBook Pro Retina was released and you may argue that the Retina display is expensive, but that was 5 years ago and the cost for the Retina display have dropped.

Did you remember a time when MacBook Pro 13" is 1199 and MacBook Pro 15" is $1799 ?

My advise is to ignore the passive aggressive comments.. They are without a doubt the main issue here on MR but I'll digress..

Yup sure do remember those prices and yes like I stated the Apple tax is getting out of hand.. If the upward swing continues, I'll have to reevaluate my future purchases.. I was just comparing to last years version as to why I decided to buy.. :)

Your maturity and wisdom are just shining through in your responses! First of all it's "Somalia" and you gotta love 'murica. And second, you are completely missing the point of not having a "all in" financial situation. Let's just leave this train wreck of a discussion alone and just leave it at I'm "pathetic".

Oh, okay.

I am going to retreat back to 'murica.
