How do you restore your Mac an earlier point?

Somehow I lost all my settings and files for all my applications. Music, Pictures, Videos, Bookmarks, IM Contacts all have disappeared. My Apps are still there but act as if I just got the computer. Is there anyway I can get them back. I don't have Time Machine hooked up.

If you don't have a backup facility, there's really not much you can do...

Always use an external backup drive, its a life saver.
