Carrier How do you switch carriers with an online trade-in?

I'm going to be switching to Sprint from AT&T with a trade in and will order online. How will this work? They want a trade-in but will I be able to hold onto my current phone until the new one arrives and then send it in? Also, to switch carriers, do I go through sprint only or do I have to call AT&T to cancel?

Has anyone gone through this recently? Thanks.
