checksumm in Disk Utility to Verify DVD/Disk Image is correct?

Hello I have never used checksumm but now trying to confirm DVDs I've burned on my Superdrive are stable/correct. I've looked on YouTube etc for an explanation on checksumm and how to use it in the Mac Disk Utility but to no avail. So I'm hoping this forum someone can explain how to use checksumm to verify the stability/completeness of my DVD burns. There's an option in disk utility to "add checksumm" but I dont' know how...I tried to add to the DVD when I started burning it but that was a no go and when I add to a disc image, it says complete but when I try to verify the disk image I get an error message saying there's no checksumm in the disk image. SO Frustrating I hope someone can help here. Thank you in advance!

I've always used Toast to burn DVDs and it will verify the disc after burning. Also lets you control the burn rate.
