How do you use F buttons on mac games?

When I'm playing games on my macbook pro.... Sometimes the F buttons have uses in the game.
I want to know how to use these instead lowering or making the screen brighter.
Or even adding more volume.
How do you make these work?

Go to system preferences --> keyboard & mouse --> keyboard. Check "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"
