i use chat clients such as palringo that does not support ios multitasking and use backgrounder to run in backgroun. remove recents kills this even though it was backgrounded by backgrounder, while with remove backgrounds i can configure exceptions to not remove palringo, so it removes everything else....

remove background is the way to go....

I have a game call iHearts that does not support iOS 4 multitasking. If I configure Backgrounder to use the "Backgrounder" method to background it, it stays running until I manually quit it using the task switcher. This is true with Remove Recents running or not. The same is true with Atomic Web Browser.

its not true for the chat programs... maybe with games... idk

but bottomline, i like control of what gets removed...

I just tested Palringo. If I have Remove Recents installed and configure an Override in Backgrounder so that Palringo uses the Backgrounder backgrounding method, it stays running as expected.

Remove Recents, used in conjunction with Backgrounder, gives you all the control you could want with none of the hassle.

maybe the new ios optimized version of palringo does that.. bottomline remove background gives me control, its already working as i needed, doesnt have to worry whether the app is optimized for ios 4.0 or not...

The great thing about using Remove Recents with Backgrounder is that I control what apps show up in the task switcher AND actually run in the background. And it is automatic.

So I don't have to manually run RemoveBG unless I want to kill one or more apps that I normally want running in the background. In fact, I hardly ever use RemoveBG because of its shotgun approach. Because of the control I get with Remove Recents with Backgrounder, I usually only want to kill one app so I use the task switcher to do that.

Life got much simpler with Remove Recents with Backgrounder.

Remove Recents only removes (closes) apps that support Fast Switching only. No more and no less. There is no reason to not close them nor is there a reason to have control over when they get closed.

In my experience, Remove Recents removes only apps that do not support any of Apple's native multitasking options (including Fast App Switching). If an app supports Fast App Switching, Remove Recents will not remove it even if it is not actually doing anything in the background.

You're right.....

Fast App switching is part of Apple's native multitasking options.

Remove Recents removes only apps that do not support any of Apple's native multitasking options.

I know better.....and will be more cognizant of this in the future.

I actually wish it had the option to remove apps which use only Fast Application Switching, too. It's something I've really been wanting.

switcherplus has the the kill prior option.

u can put exclusions and exceptions as well. plus it adds an arrow type badge when ur in wiggle mode to kill prior apps. pretty tight.

I use Overrides in Backgrounder to set the backgrounding method for those apps to "Off". It's a little bit of work to get those all setup but I do it as I come across them.

Yeah, I do, too. But I actually wouldn't mind the saved states being in RAM; they don't really hurt anything. I just don't want those apps clogging up the switcher.

ya, we want to actually use the task manager as a task manager....who would of thought.......WOW...

Oh, but this isn't a task manager; after all, task managers suck and if you have a task manager you're doing something wrong. </Steve Jobs>

What I really want is an OSX-style dock that scrolls like Infinidock and will contain both persistent shortcuts and open/backgrounded apps automatically. Basically, combine the dock and the switcher into one. Pop that dock up instead of the task switcher when home is double-pressed and put OSX-style dots under the icons of open apps and you have the perfect solution (IMO) for multitasking on the iPhone.
