5 Stars = Favourite songs
4 Stars = Good songs and Favourite Live songs
2/3 Stars = OK, not too bad, require more listening ...
1 Star = DELETE from my library after a few more listens and my opinion on the song hasn't changed.

I have a few playlists that relate to these ratings.

This is what really separates the iPod from all other music players for me. There is so much integration between library on the computer and library on the iPod, and "on the go", you can make changes which will copy to the computer from the iPod or vice versa.

Fantastic! :)

0 Stars = Never got around to listening to it fully...
1 Star = Only for songs purchased from iTMS which I won't delete from iTunes
2 Stars = On iTunes for the occasional listen, not good though.
3 Stars = The universal rating - every unrated song gets a 3
4 Stars = Its an awesome song, but not gonna go on repeat any time soon
5 Stars = a) Great Music in my library which I love! or b) Songs by R.E.M. or Green Day

I will never delete FREE/Purchased songs from the iTMS from my library.

i think about 25% of my iPod minis tunes are rated. and ive got about 1600 tracks on there (ok along with the plethora of ~1 minute Dead Ringers tracks :D).

5 star= either something novelty which will be downgraded or a track i could not live without. currently 120 of them on my pod.
4 star= brilliant. not something i could loop around all day but good nonetheless!
3 star= ive only started rating anything less than 4 star. 3 star is ok. could play again without forcing myself.
1+2 star= everytime my pod is synced up i delete these.

ive got the obvious "Top Rated" playlist, but im quite surprised at how many people dont have a "5 Star playlist". remember on some Smart Playlist site, a guy submitted that and it got loads of comments going along the "why didnt i think of that!" line. :)

5= my absolute, classic, all-time favorites
4= pretty good music, i like a lot, but i'm not married to it, i'll forget about it soon but will still like it when i hear it
3= it's ok, good background music, because it's generic and nondescript... the "filler" of most albums
2= only holding onto this to complete an album
1= stuff like iTrip stations or spoken word, i'll never want it in a music playlist.

i've only just started using ratings, and the vast majority of my library is unrated, but every once in a while i'll do a bunch... one day it will be finished :)

For me, the songs I put on my ipod I obviously like and they get five stars. To give everything five stars though kindof defeats the whole purpose.

I have the same problem. To me, if it's below four stars, what's the point of having it? That's why I decided to call a 4 star rating a 1 star in iTunes. That gives better rating resolution. </nerd>

Basically my approach, although bad and not listenable at all are both in the 1 star category. 2 is rarely listenable.

zero is for unrated, or songs I need to reburn.

Ratings are great for smart playlists. It took me quite some time to get everything rated, though. But now it's terrific.

Hi my name is Raid, and I'm obsessive about my music...

I try to keep my music list as complete and accurate as possible. The only thing I'm not a stickler for is Album names, because usually these days an album only has a few good songs so knowing the album it came from is passing trivia. I do try to list the year the song was recorded, or the original release date (unless it's like a dance version or something) and in the comments section I try to list the theme, subject or category of the song (i.e. Love, Love/Hate, Feeling Evil, Things I can't drive too, etc.) The star ratings I use for the tempo or mood of the song that I split into 5 categories:
* = Mellow
** = Low Groove
*** = Good Groove
**** = High Groove
***** = Pure Energy

I use this to gauge music for appropriate events, for example if I made a play list for a romantic dinner with my fiancée I might select only songs with one or two stars that contain the phrase "mood music" in the comments field.

....
Yeah so sometimes I do have too much time on my hands. :p

I seem to have a problem with occasional songs (ITMS songs, in particular) crashing my iPod. Once it resets, I rate them 2 stars.

I use iRate that ratess the songs atuomatically. It does a good job as the stars numbers are what i would of chosen. Just takes time for the system to rate newly imported albums. I recommend it to anyone who is lazy like me and as i have said it does a good job.

I'm happy to hear from people who use my software. It's comments like this that keep me working on iRate. Thanks!

And now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

My own system is very similar to this. To clarify, for me 3 stars mark songs I don't mind listening to but would never consider to be my favorites -- things I might just listen to in the background while I'm doing something else. 1 star means it's a song I hope I never hear again for as long as I live. I only use 0 stars if I just haven't taken the time to rate a song.

And then when I'm going and backing up my entire CD collection to DVD-R using the FLAC lossless format, I create playlists for "all songs", "listenable (3 stars) songs" and "best (4-5 stars) songs". This way I can either listen to a general good mix, or only those I really like, and I do have one playlist of all songs just for the sake of having it.

iRate you say? I've versiontracked on it... to no avail... could you send a link?

EDIT: never mind, i googled it up... gonna try it.

I haven't really rated my songs yet. This is in large part due to the fact that my library is only partially tagged - I'd like to get the tagging finished before I start assigning ratings.

I have never really used it. I don't really see the benefit. I figure if I don't like a song, I don't have it in my iTunes.

yeah, i don't use it. the artist / track name is enough for me to identify the record. i'm checking out iRate now though... it might be interesting for the sake of analysing my own habits.
EDIT: {cuckoo the link is on the previous page of this thread]

With a little over 10,000 tracks in my library and roughly 24 hours in a day, it's gonna take me quite a while to ever get through my collection so iRate would be great (excuse the rhyme) but reasonably ineffectual. :(

I gave up on rating music back at about 2000 songs and have since given up on any other info apart from artist and song name so that when I look through the library, it all appears ordered properly (alphabetically). So now when I import a CD, I ditch all the unnecessary info immediately.

I don't use the rating system. I don't have a use for it. When I listen to music, I usually always just listen to an album I haven't listened to in a long time. If I want to listen to a particular song, I'll listen to it and so on.

For putting songs on my Shuffle, I made a huge playlist of all of my favorite songs. I then sync those songs randomly to my Shuffle and will sync it everyy few days.

i use my rating system because you can't erase songs on ipod

*=double/just a bad song
**=wrong info or bad song quality need to re rip.
***=ok songs
****=really good songs
*****=songs i would pay for if i havent already

I give the music i actually paid for five stars, and no stars for my illegal music. out of just under 1800 songs only about 600 of them are legal. makes me feel kinda guilty

I use my ratings like this

***=good
****=really good
*****=my absolute favorite

I also use the rating system to make playlists of my highest-lowest ratings

:D
