I find it so much easier using my iPhone in bed. !!!
 
If that doesn't work put your hand between your iPad and the bed. That's what i do wen I'm charging and have headphones in.
 
I have my three year old hold it for me. I just tell him when to move. He's getting a bit reluctant to help so we're considering another kid or maybe bribing him.

That is what I use.

When travelling, despite having a decent place with a desk and workspace, it's never quite as comfortable as the workspace in your office or your workspace at home.

I usually find myself answering emails in bed with the ZooGue case, which is completely adjustable via the velcro to fit any viewing angle.

I have also watched Netflix movies in bed with this case, so I know it'll adjust to what the original poster is trying to do. The data/charging port and the headphone port would both be off to the side in landscape mode, the weight being carried by the support of the case.

This is not the cheapest case that does this, but it's one of the two best, I think.
 
This thread has made my night. You could try flipping the ipad around or finding another comfortable position (which have been explained by numerous pictures).
