So you're telling me a lightning port version of Apple's earpods would be at the same quality as the existing 3.5mm headphone jack ones?

I think it will be worse. I would be surprised if they put the same quality DAC and amp that they have in the current iPhones into every little earpod that they sell.

Samsung has a waterproof 3.5mm jack.
Better audio is the DAC, not the port.

How is the flimsy Lightning connector a better solution than the proven and working 3.5mm jack? Ever tried to lightly pull a cable out of either of those? Lightning comes off loose a lot easier. I shudder at this design decision. WTF.

But HOW will headphones stay plugged into a lightning connector? The Lightning connector isn't tight enough to support headphones. You wouldn't be able to put the phone in your pocket with out it becoming unplugged... ¯\(°_O)/¯

What are you talking about? The lightning cable *clicks* into place when I plug in my phone to be charged. Does yours not? Heck, I just picked up my cable with my iphone attached and it was dangling from the lightning port without falling out.

I don't think it's as secure.

EarPods won't be discontinued and there is no real evidence that they'll make/include Lightning EarPods.
Benefit to them is saving internal space and pushing wireless headphones.

Not sure what phone and l-cable you got, but the iphone5 + l-cable combo I got doesn't *click* into place at all. The surface of the connector is flat so there is nothing to actually make a *click*, and the connection feels more flimsy and the cable is quite a bit easier to pull out accidentally than the one provided by the 3.5mm connector.

Better audio is based on 2 things (actually it's a few but these are the main 2):

-quality of the material (hi-res audio [24-bit/48khz or greater, how well it was recorded/mixed])
-quality of the DAC

Regardless, it still needs to be converted to analog, so either the headphones would need a DAC or you need an external DAC if connected to a Hi-Fi system. Just because it's digital doesn't mean it's better audio.

iPhone 6+, Apple supplied cable. I can plug my cable into my phone and dangle it from the cable and it doesn't fall out.

So, this means that EarPods as we know it will be discontinued.

Can anybody tell me what's the benefit of turning the headphone jack into a lightening connector? What benefit does it provide?

Why would they do such a thing? And how would you be able to charge your phone?

Its so apple can call it an external adapter and exclude giving your free headphones when you a new phone.

The "click" happens on the sides of the connector, not on the flat surfaces.

I just pulled the Lightning connection out, it comes out too easy. That's why I don't think it's such a good idea.

Doesn't matter as the connection is still pretty loose, compared to the one provided by the 3.5mm connector.

Anyone with the tools to set up an experiment on exactly how much force it takes to pull out either one of the cables from an iphone?

You definitely need more force to pull out a 3,5mm plug than a lightning...
I really can't support Apple's decision to remove such a connector from the phone!

Sounds like some people honestly believe Apple is only doing this to upset them and/or sell adaptors. Really? Apple has a long history of replacing tech before people are ready, but let’s face it, some people will never be ready unless it’s forced on them. In the short term this might benefit competitors to have Apple take the brunt of the disapproval hit for such a move but eventually the actual benefit becomes apparent and everybody else is doing it.

Stop it. You're speaking sense. People prefer hysteria and gnashing of teeth!

No...people would prefer the 3.5" jack to stay.

The water resistance and better audio can still be done w/the 3.5" jack intact.

But the other benefits cannot.

People only want it to stay because they're concerned about change. We go through this every time Apple makes a shift. They were the first major player to remove floppy drives. They were the first major player to remove integrated optical drives ... that was a huge outcry, and yet it was the right decision. When Apple decided to go to Lightning from the 30-pin connector, you'd think the world was coming to an end based on the reactions at large.

This will be no different.
