How does Apple Watch ultra cope with sand? E.g building sandcastles at the beach with kids etc

Opposable thumbs ?

I meant it was crap at building sandcastles. Even worse than the kids would be.

Would it cope with sand? Yeah, it's dust and water resistant. It's made to be able to take it scuba diving. Would I intentionally bury it in sand, stand on it, and try to mash sand into the openings and buttons? No. But general normal use, it will of course be fine.

If you’re digging into the sand with your hands and your watch on, you’re going to get sand lodged in the digital crown. I’d be careful when dislodging that sand, at the very least. I certainly wouldn’t make an habit of the activity. Personally, if I was going up to my elbows in sand, I’d take the watch off first.

I’d note that you’d probably be fine moving the watch to your ankle while digging, as an easy way to not lose it. Of course, this assumes that your kids won’t be burying you, and that you’ll move it back to your wrist before plunging your feet into the sand.

I would not go full ten-year-old-in-the-sand with the watch. Maybe with a future version that doesn’t have a digital crown that physically moves, but not this version.

I do, however, fully intend to take my Ultra to the beach and get knocked over by a great many waves.

The Apple Watch Ultra is water-resistant to 50 meters, which means it can withstand short periods of immersion in water. However, it is not sand-resistant. Sand can get into the watch and cause damage, so it is important to take care when wearing it in sandy conditions.

That’s not true. It is water resistant to 100M, has IP6X dust resistance, and MIL-STD 810H compliance.

I highly recommend not bringing it to any beach. I swam in oceans with my original Series 4 but it only lasted two years, its replacement just 18 months. I am not swimming with my Series 8 whatsoever.

I spend a lot of time at the beach with my series 4. Swim, surf, paddle board and even dig in the sand with it. It is over 4 years old and is completely operational. Mine is the aluminum case so I think the Ultra will be fine.

I have experienced sand getting behind the crown and preventing me from depressing it. This was easily remedied with a quick rinse or swish around in the water.
