Subscribed iCal calendars are basically just remote calendars that you elect to receive updates to periodically. The calibration thing isn't complicated to understand - it doesn't "know" about your particular battery's status, all it does is remind you on a fixed schedule. I'm not sure what you mean by subscription info - please explain.
 
I'm not really curious as to how iCal subscriptions work, but I am curious if there are any other substantive databases of iCal subscriptions outside of what is on Apple's website. I'd like some sports teams' schedules, maybe local events, etc. User-generated or otherwise.
