I've seen this asked, buried in the pre-order threads, but never a definitive answer (on the lines/appts part).

So I know you can buy online or in store and take your trade in later to the store.... but you have a certain number of days.... well the stores have always been busy with lines or appointments for 2-4 weeks past launch day....

so how does trade in work when you get your phone delivered at home but take the trade in to the store during busy launch days? stand in line for an hour? any way to get an appt online?

You have to bring your trade-in device with you to the store when you pickup the new device; I have not seen Apple offer an option to trade in at a later date.

EDIT: I was incorrect- now you are able to bring back your phone on a later day and trade it in towards your purchase.

When I bought my 13PM, I traded in my 5 y.o. 8 Plus at the store. They let me take the 8 Plus home so I could use it to set up my 13PM, and I brought it back the next day and got the $140.00 for my trade-in

The past two years I’ve purchased online for home delivery on release day and I did not select the trade in option. Then, after I setup the new phone I took my previous phone into the store for a trade in.

At the end of the trade-in process and just before they issue the refund there’s an option to tie it to a purchase. Sometimes you have to tell the person who’s processing the trade in about this option as they don’t always know. But if you get somebody who knows what they’re doing it’s really fast. You’ll also need to take the credit card used for the purchase so they can refund to that card.

Past upgrades I've always had some limited time window to return it.

However, this probably depends on if you're doing the Apple Upgrade or a Carrier Trade-in?

If I was trading in my old iPhone, I'd have Apple store rep do the transfer and then wipe, just to be sure it's done correctly.

did you have to stand in the long line to get in to the store when you went back for the trade in?

Usually you have an appointment time so any waiting in line is brief. Of course this can vary from store to store, but in the past few years I’d say it’s been very fast, a in/out in under 30 mins easily.

but how do i get an appt for only trade in? i know you can set up an appt when buying something... i'm not buying anything IN STORE. i plan to have it delivered home, then take the phone back another day within the couple week time period where in the past there have been lines waiting to get in,

Can’t tell you as I’ve always dropped my trade-ins off at a Verizon store IIRC.

Are you specifying a trade in when you make the purchase ?
If so, Apple sends a return box kit to your home.

i don't want to send it in.... i had issues when i sent in hubby's iPad. i want to take it back to the store. i know you can take it to the store... i just want to know the logistics when they are always lines for a few weeks after launch. i don't want to have to stand in line for an hour to do a trade in only.

I usually just go up to the front of the store and let the employee know I’m here for only a trade in. One time I had to wait in a line the other time they had me go wait at a table. The whole process took less than a hour.

If I was trading in personally, I'd do the store delivery since you have to go there anyway.

The Apple reps will transfer all your stuff onto the new phone, wipe it and you unlock it - then they take it off your hands.

All done in one visit.

Easy.

It’s honestly really easy.

The past two years I have done this exact same thing with the iPhone upgrade program.

When I ordered the phone and I had selected in-store pick up, I always tell the person giving me the new phone that I’m going to bring my old phone on a later day. On that later day, I simply say I have an iPhone to return from the iPhone upgrade program, and they immediately start the process to trade in and close out my old loan. I always ask them to email the receipt just in case anything goes wrong, but I have done this the past two years without any issues whatsoever. The loan closes out a few days later.

For those who purchase the phone with the option to “connect to a carrier later” you can do these exact same steps, just there’s no loan for them to close out and they’ll instead credit/refund to the card you used to make the purchase. You can trade in your old phone at time of pick up or bring it back within 14 days to have them process the trade in. You could probably ask them to schedule an appointment for you to bring it back for trade in on another day although I’ve never done that.

yeah, I think you have fourteen days to do it. You don't have to do the trade in that same day.

i don't want to go to the store on friday. i want it delivered. i already have a watch coming that i need to be home for. the store is just over an hour away so not convenient for me to go on friday.

as far as setting up my phones... i've been doing my, my hubby's and my mom's phones (and iPads and macs and watches) since the 3G phone.... i have never had an issue and like doing my own phone. i don't want or need the store to do set up and wipe the other phone.

i just want to take the phone to the store within the trade in period rather than send it in since when i sent in hubby's iPad, there was an issue.... (which was resolved but still meant extra time on the phone and my irritation at the 3rd party idiots!)

i want it delivered.... i want to set up my own phone.... and i want to take the trade in another day..... easy

You said there are lines at the Apple store 'for weeks' after launch. That is not the case at my local Apple store and I would bet nor at yours either.

Apple stores are busiest from Friday launch day morning - Sunday night. If you want to trade-in your old iPhone after you have the new one setup, just don't go on those days if you can.

You don't need an appointment. You have 14 days from when you have received your new iPhone to bring in your old iPhone and receive money for it.

If you don't feel comfortable going without an appointment, schedule a 'shopping appointment' online. That way you have an Apple employee that will be waiting for you. They should be able to easily handle your trade-in.

Def won’t be able to do it day of. But if you are going another day at least here in Austin they will have people out front and you can go up to them and let them know what you are needing to do and they’ll either let you in or put you in a different line that isn’t for pickups etc

So taking it back to the Apple Store within 14 days and getting credit on the card that one used for original purchase, understood that part. However when ordering the iPhone tomorrow shall one select trade in or not ? I’ve heard stories of Apple refusing in person trade ins since a box 📦 was originally sent to customer.

Do not select trade-in if you are going to do it at the Apple store down the road.

OK.... weeks was wrong, but i swear that there was still a line the following weekend (and i need to go either on fri, sat or sun due to work)

i had no plans to go next weekend at all.... planned for the following weekend (27th/28th).

i guess i could order a cable or something online for store pick up if i thought there was going to be an issue with a line still a week later!

thank you for your reply!
