iPod How does iTunes know...

...to put the "right" version on your iDevice?

I have a digital copy of "Alice in Wonderland" and then I ripped the BD. I then tagged them with iFlicks which - after exporting the file to iTunes - merged the library entry to show "HD-SD" just like it does when you buy an HD movie/TV show from the store.

If I browse to my iTunes folder, it of course shows both files, but I am just curious how it knows.
