How does number porting work when you order online?

...is the new phone not active until you receive it (your current phone/provider is "good" until you choose to activate the new one)? Thanks.

Ok cool, thanks. Just wanted to ensure there wasn't going to be any interruption of service while waiting for the new one to arrive.
