How does the Facebook app detect your contacts to sync?

Hi,

I'm trying to match ALL my contacts with my Facebook to get their latest info and pics also. How does it work? I got a couple of contacts automatically synced, but there are still a couple who have no match. What info does it require? Can I get it all directly from facebook and sync it? Can I link to their profiles?

Help is appreciated.
