How does these icon come about?

I just upgraded from SL to Maverick. Why am I getting all these shadowy icon on my desk top where I don't seems able to get rid off. When mouse over nothing happen. Only reboot seems to get rid of.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but why not El Cap? It has been faster on my old 2010 machine than Mavericks or Yosemite ever were.
