So I just saw a show on tinder stating their net value. This value was made by selling information of the users. I did wonder why firms are willing to pay for this information. They do not know a lot of the user. Or is this information correlated with other information from apps used on your device?

I think you severely under-estimate the info apps like tinder can get out of you.

They are location aware. So they know where you are when you use the app. Which means if you are in a shop, or a restaurant, they know which one it is. They know your age, sex, sexual preference, email address, etc. Where you work and where you live is also all there in the data if they mine it.

And thats all without any need for data shared from other apps.

What show did you see that made that claim?

I didn't see it on any show - all of the data i mention is easily obtained from your connection history.

Read the tinder (or any online service) privacy policy and you'll find it basically boils down to "we will use any and all information you submit for our own purposes".

Location aware search requires that you send your location to tinder, at a particular date, time, etc. Your preferences are required to determine matches. Etc. You'll find the privacy policy enables tinder (or whatever other service) to use any info you send them for "stuff" they want to use it for, which may or may not match what you think they use it for.

I think he was referring to the show the OP saw, not what show you saw... carry on
I saw it on the Belgian government broadcast. They were having a ten minutes show on Tinder.
