How far does NFC reach?

I see videos of people tapping the phone against the NFC terminal, but wondering how far away the phone has to be from the NFC terminal in order for it to work?

Was hoping that it would work from 2-4' away. How are you suppose to use it through McDonalds drive-thu?

The workers are supposed to hold the card machine out of the drive thru window for you to "tap" the NFC Area.
