That would be iPAD with keyboard, wouldn't it?

More like a a "Macbook Taichi Pro" (since Yoga has been taken by Lenovo)

I dont agree. Having a touch screen inside a laptop display will be a very bad idea, as Tim cook said in the last keynote "pc people are confused, they are making windows into tablets and tablets in to the pc'es"

And why make a touch screen when you have the mouse.

Touchscreens have been pretty successful in the PC market, it was problematic at first, but look at the Lenovo Yoga, aside from a discrete GPU, almost everything about it is elegant.

Remember comments Apple has made about screen size... the iPhone 6 is likely to have a bigger one because the market now seems to like bigger screens, otherwise they wouldn't be testing it out.

If Tim can't see that Lenovo is successfully executing a laptop+tablet strategy that is popular among consumers, then Tim may as well be like Steve Balmer in missing out the mobile market.

i cant stand a laptop thats 4 years old. programs get features added to them not taken away thus require more hardware. i try to upgrade every 2 years because your just limiting yourself with an old laptop. sucks they are not user upgradable anymore so my retina 13 has to be sold before i loose too much on it ( maxed out 13') that way i pay 200$ every other year on top of the ~$150 loss apple laptops usually take to upgrade to always having the newest.

its like lease car vs own

The only thing I can see coming up in the future within the next couple of years if not sooner is a touchscreen MBP. Being at the end of the 10.X, chances are Apple is likely to pull something together special for 11.0.

Pfft - 10.10 :p

i doubt touchscreen will ever come to the macbook pro. i still haven't seen a reason for them to do so nor do i even want that.

... Would getting the higher tier model be crazy overkill for someone who primarily browses web/wordprocessing/movies/netflix?

I have a 15" unibody MBP from October 2008, just recently the airport card died, and it's just painfully slow. So yeah, 5+ years.

That must be some awfully hardcore web browsing / word processing / movies / netflixing for it to be "painfully slow". Especially so if by my point of reference with the last pre-unibody model being still quite competent to do all of the aforementioned tasks.

Is any thing future proof. The MacPro body is pretty long in the tooth. For all we know Johnny Ives could be at his drafting table right now drawing up Darth Vader's new black laptop to match with the Mac Pro Trash Can. :D

Macs are generally known to perform well 5-6 years down the road. Can't see it lasting only 3 years, especially with how efficient OS X is getting.

OSX is much more lenient on old machines. My 2007 MBP is running Mavericks just fine. It actually got faster with Memory Compression in 10.9.

I agree. My MBP came with OSX 10.4, 6 years ago, and it still runs 10.9 perfectly fine. I upgraded it with 6GB of RAM and an SSD but I can definitely imagine using it stock with 10.9.

(Battery-wise it lasts ~ 45 to 60 min, but of course it depends on how you wear it and the technologies it uses : old vs. unibody battery tech.)

You could make the thing last as long as you want, just make sure to update the parts when they die and you'll be fine, or just keep a stockpile of spares and a DIY kit lmao

Hello,

Is the current model good to buy? Or is it still a sort-of "beta/work in progress" model (as in, is the previous generation more stable and less problematic, or is the current model more refined)? Also, I'm willing to spend an extra 500$ for the higher tier model - my question though, is whether or not the investment will make the computer last longer. Would getting the higher tier model be crazy overkill for someone who primarily browses web/wordprocessing/movies/netflix?

Thanks

Wait till next year's model. Or buy the late 2012/early 2013 refurb.
