Yeah... the money and effort spent getting to that last 10% of sound quality is just too much for me. The best bang for the buck is to be had in good headphones, though. I picked up a pair of mid-range Grados (GW100) for not much more than the OPs price range here, and I think they provide as much nuance as I'm able to appreciate. I go to those when I want great sound, and am content with "good enough" sound the rest of the time.
