Sorry, but that's absolute nonsense. You did all of that work yourself, and your results (before/after) are impressive, to be sure! Good work!! But that was all you. People have made efforts to lose weight by dieting or being more active, throughout most of recorded history. No Apple Watch or silly apps needed.

It's great that it's helped to motivate you, but the hard work was your own, and you didn't NEED an Apple Watch to accomplish it.
Sure, the motivation ultimately has to come from within ourselves, but an Apple watch helps. For some, it could be a catalyst to start off toward a better fitness routine, for others it could be a reminder to keep going. And the visual records of our efforts provided in Apple's Fitness app and other third-party apps can sure be a strong source of affirmation and encouragement. So I know what you mean by we don't NEED a watch to get fit, I think for many people it makes it a lot easier.

I got my series 6 with a view to improving my health and fitness.
I was already running 3 times a week and trying to walk a lot, having a dog helps with that.
But I wanted to add some variation in using Fitness+ workouts.
So now I run 3x a week, workout 3x and walk at least 2-5 miles a day with the dog.
I find the rings encourage me to keep going, and I enjoy the Fitness+ workouts.
All of the above helps me with my anxiety, stress and PTSD.

Fitness aside I soon became pleased with the other features of the AW and like it’s seamless link to the iPhone.
Very convenient and useful, even my wife is a convert after I got her one for her birthday a couple of years ago.

Totally agree. I just wish people would take credit for their own initiative and accomplishments, instead of crediting a gadget. That dude made huge improvements in his lifestyle and general fitness, and he should be proud of that. But if he realized that those changes came from within, rather than as a result of some (admittedly cool!) gadget, imagine what else he could accomplish!

Of course I could have accomplished all my goals and my lifestyle change without a watch or without an app. But the Watch and the app definitely worked and still works for me. It keeps me motivated and helps me understand what I need to improve. I have sugar and sodium problems so MyFitnessPal app helps me knowing when I need to decrease my sugar and sodium intake. It also helps me couch and explain others how to loose weight. Currently I'm helping more than 10 guys to loose weight the same way I did. I have logged into MyFitnessPal app without missing a day since Feb 8 of 2020. MyFitnessPal app gets my Apple Watch Ultra workouts automatically so I know how many calories I have left for the day. Loosing weight is the easy part, keeping the weight is the hard part and having extra tools helps you like you have no idea. I'm not in a diet regimen since Dec 2021 and I haven't gain a single pound in the last 10 months eating between 1800 and 2200 calories a day.

Purchased my first Apple Watch back on July 2019. On January 2020 decided to start loosing weight as recommended by my doctor. I’m 55 right now, 5’-7” and by that time I was 280 lbs. A1C at 6.4, cholesterol at 250 and triglycerides at 350. With MyFitnessPal app + Apple Watch started counting calories and walking. First month was painful but my daughters kept me motivated. Long story short, after almost 2 years, I’m right now at 153 lbs. A1C is 5.2, cholesterol 120 and triglycerides at 80. I run 🏃‍♂️ 8 miles twice a week, bike 27 miles 4 times a week and lift weights 3 times a week. I wouldn’t have being able to accomplish this without my Apple Watch + MyFitnessPal app.

wow, that’s amazing

Curious what app(s) you use to ID stars with the watch? That reminds me I used to use a couple on the iphone and I should try it again. Only main frustration is getting far enough away from light pollution for me. : /
Cool to know folks use the watch to ID stars though!
NightSky. Had it for ages. You just hold your wrist up, line it up with whatever, and it shows the object’s name.

Nothing fancy. It’s the equivalent of pointing to something and having the amateur astronomer next to you say, “Oh, that’s Arcturus.”

Being able to monitor my activity (or lack thereof) makes it a lot easier to identify areas where I need to improve. It hasn’t been anything huge but it has helped.

LOVE NightSky! It actually made me look at the sky and realize how lucky we are on the Little Rock called earth!

As someone with mild heart problems and asthma, I would always go into panic mode when I noticed any arrhythmia or abnormalities in my heart beat. One time it got so bad I drove myself to the hospital and sat parked outside the ER until things normalized, just in case.

It may sound silly, but wearing the watch has provided me with immense peace of mind and I am now leading a healthier life due to the plethora of data available.

- It tracks my sleep, and I’ve been using it to learn what I do during the day and evening that results in a good night’s sleep.

- It reminds me to stand up at work during the day, which I also use to look out the window rather than just focusing on my screen.

- I don’t feel the need to always put my phone in my pocket when I walk around the house or go to the kitchen at work.

I have similar experiences (weight loss, better BP/blood sugar, overall fitness)..
And two years into ownership I would have said the health benefits were the golden ring.

But after 4 years of wearing a cellular model the biggest "life changing" aspect is noted above: the ability to leave my phone and its distractions in the car or at home.

Sure I still get focus-fenced notifications on the watch, its all the other peripheral things the phone provides (scrolling through news, feeds, games, etc) that I can leave behind that makes my life better.

Doing those things is just easier than staying engaged in what is going on around me.

If it wasn't for the fact that CarPlay isn't available straight from the watch, I would probably leave my phone home more often.

I just feel better knowing that its not around to waste my time with.

I’m not sure about life changing, but I’ve had some definite positives. I’ve always been a stickler for wearing mechanical watches only. I’m not a watch connoisseur by any means, I just like the way they feel and the simplicity (love my Shinola watch!). I stared kicking around the idea about an Apple Watch because I’m an avid motorcyclist and god forbid anything ever happened, the watch could make the necessary calls for EMS and alert others about it. So, out of concern for my loved ones, I went to purchase the series 8 and it’s been a pleasant surprise.

I am the kind of person who wakes up 1 minute before the alarm because I don’t want to wake anyone else with it’s noise, which results in on and off sleep throughout the night because your brain gets wired to keep waking up to be sure you don’t let it go off…with the haptic alarm on the watch, I can sleep absolutely like a rock now the entire night and get gentle pulses to wake up. It’s been an absolute gift! It’s been a VERY long time since I’ve felt this refreshed and relaxed when waking up. Also, the maps on the watch is incredibly helpful when im on the motorcycle that I can glance down instead of having to pull over to take out the phone or worry about mounting it somewhere on the handle bars. Honestly, I haven’t worn my mechanical watch in a couple of weeks now and I probably won’t again for a long time. Im totally sold on the Apple Watch experience and there’s certainly a ton of positive, healthy benefits if you choose to take advantage of them.

I retired in 2008 and took my watch off and swore I'd never wear another one!! Then this funny thing happened, I started getting old!! My wife died and I live alone with my dog. Started worrying about him being alone if something happened to me. Then I read about AW and all the things it does on its own, like calling 911 if heart trouble or anything else goes wrong during my sleep. It was like buying myself a room mate!! Now I love it and never take it off. Also been an athlete all my life and love all the things it tells me about my physical conditions and my workout habits.

Now I wish I'd had one of these when I was young. It surely would have helped me be an even better athlete..

That’s absolutely incredible. Congratulations and much-deserved respect!

I hope to follow in your footsteps… er, pedals… someday and lose my weight too. I’ve been depressed my entire life (for various reasons) so the weight just piled on. I have swollen ankles, my back has a lumbar fusion done to it, and I have arthritis almost everywhere. Worst of all, I’m not even 40 yet.

But my watch is always there for me, kind of like a personal trainer. I use to struggle walking to the end of my driveway, and now I’m starting to go a mile. I don’t think I could find the motivation to do it without my watch.

Thank you for sharing this. Loved reading it! I hadn't worn a watch for over ten years and also swore I wouldn't again. My love of tech gadgets finally tempted me to get an Apple Watch and I can't imagine not having it now.

Hello Everybody... I decided to answer this thread because for me it has been very important. In 2019, around september, I was over weight, I was 45 YO and I was 1,94 mt tall for 114 kg...almost obese, then, I decided to buy an apple watch... which for me has been a real life saver device.... during the lockdown I have never stopped walking, I bought a tapis-roulant and everyday I spent my afternoon making km over km... I live alone so the day was boring, staying inside home... and then when in late 2020 we could go outside, I already had lost about 8 kg... Since then, I never stopped, now I am 1,94 mt tall and my weight is 91 kg, BMI 24, I am a Nordic Walker and everyday I go outside to run for 10-12 km...also on the mountain where I have a House I like very much hill roads. Now I feel fine, and I must thank the Apple Watch for saving my life, because It has motivated me everyday not to stop my fitness activity. Thank you Apple. Thank you Apple Watch (now on Ultra....). I also wrote to Tim Cook to explain my gratitude but he never has replied me. I live in North Italy. If you look at me in 2019 and then now... you cannot even recognize me! Have a nice day everybody. Ciao ciao.
