when i first started my mbp it was going strong at about 29 celcius but when i left it on the carpet for lunch and various other activities, the temp jumped up to 75 celcius, wtf? could it be from heavy downloading?

Ack! My guess is that "carpet" falls in line with towels and pillows. See below.

When using your portable computer, place it on a hard surface, such as a desktop or a tray. A hard surface allows air to flow under the computer to dissipate heat. Placing it on a soft surface such as a towel or pillow (or lap) is not recommended because it does not allow air to flow under the computer.

i was aware of that but when i left it on a table afterwards it would level off from about 78 to 75, the problem is when it was 29, it was being used on my lap.

People have to realize all these temp reports are based on very loose methodologies. The surface in which the mbp sits matters (desk, carpet, bed, etc) because some will allow bottom ventilation while others simply don't. Also, the idle temps should be measured based on a ventilated surface while nothing else but Finder is running and leaving it that way for atleast 5-10 mins to be safe.

Yeah, when it's off. No seirously, you can't go below 25 no matter what. That would be as cool as room temperature.

Lucky punks getting 35-40 C. I get around 40-45. Before the frimware update, it would do upto 75 under heavy load, but now tops at 65 C.😀

For what it's worth, out of 160 MacBook Pros entered in at http://intelmactemp.com, the average running temp is 52.

If yours was running at 29 after having been turned on for awhile, it's not normal.

it was a 29 for at least an hour, so if thats not normal what should i do to get it fixed?

I'm on my wife's macbook.
It seems to average at 39c according to coreduo. I've been mainly just using for web.
I have no idea what an average/preferred running temperature would be.
It seems in the middle of everyone's readings. Some are getting around 60, and some are getting in the 20s?
