So, Face ID uses your face to unlock the device. How does it work for purchasing apps and unlocking passwords storage app? For example, in App Store, Face ID recognises you as the user but that does not mean you approve purchases. With home button, we just put the thumb on it. With Face ID. how does it work?

For apps that use a password to access them, you use your face to gain access instead of your finger.

For purchases, once the phone has recognized your face, you double press the side button to confirm the purchase.

I love my bank app opening up when I click it. In authenticates without me having to do anything.

My paypal verifies for a split second and auto fills my password.

Purchases like iTunes, you have to double click side button after it verifies your face so there is no mistake of purchase.

Apple Pay you have to click side button twice first as it’s authenticating your face, you hold your phone to the reader.

All this is so fluid you forget your actually authenticating anything like you do with finger print sensor yet it’s more secure And one of my favorite features.

Thanks all. I still prefer the home button way.
[doublepost=1522369124][/doublepost]How do all these work when the environment is dark? How can Face ID see the face clearly? Imagine the case of needing to unlock the phone to check something in a cinema or needing to do something using the phone while walking in the dark.

It uses infrared. Read through this:

I actually find that it works better in the dark vs bright light.

You can unlock in complete dark.

Occasionally I unlock my phone during the middle the night in bed. No issues with infra red. It works even with the most dimmed to no display light setting.

In practice, does FaceID work well 99-100% of the time? Home button works 100% of the time.

In general? Yes. Will your phone unlock with Face ID if it’s flat on a table and your face isn’t directly over it? Then no. That’s the only plus side to Touch ID IMO, but if you’re someone who does that 1,000+ times a day, you might as well set auto lock to never.

Thanks. I am trying to predict if I would be happy with iPP 2018 with Face ID. What do you think of Face ID's performance on a much bigger 12.9" display?

I cannot understand why Face ID cannot work under both landscape and portrait modes.

I think it will work just as well as it does on the X. I don’t see why it wouldn’t TBH.

Not sure about the orientation. Maybe the current technology only allows for the TrueDepth camera and other sensors to read your face in portrait mode. Maybe we will see landscape unlock in the next version of Face ID. If Apple wants it, they will find a way lol

What if the user tilts the head by 90 degrees. Does that work?

In the cinema? How dare you

On topic. It uses infrared to see your face. So it should work better in the dark compared to bright sunlight with lots of infrared light pollution.

How would you be able to achieve quantitative data from 99% of time with Face ID versus 100% a time with touch ID? Neither of which are guaranteed 100% accuracy for any user.

I wish you just had to hit the side button once in the iTunes and app store, the double press makes me feel like I'm on a pc.
