How is AT&T Next a Good Deal? You End Up Paying More

Being that there is a next 12 and 18. Although, I'd never do next. If opting for 12 months. I'm betting most people will swap phones after 12 months, rather than pay off over 20.
at&t next is a really good deal IF you are on at&t mobile share plan. If you are on any other plan, do not get next. The way the contract works on at&t is you pay $40/mo per line that is on contract. If you sign up for the next plan or go for no-contract you get a $15 or $25 discount ($25 discount for 10Gb plans or higher). You initially pay $0 for the iPhone and then $32.45 over 12 months or $27.09 over 24 months. That does come out to be $650 which is the price of the iPhone.
On the other hand you can go on contract. you pay $199 for the iPhone and an additional $40 for activation fee. You don't get the $25 next discount, so over 24 mo contract thats $600. You have just spend $839 by signing up for the contract vs spending $650.
Basically, you save $189 by signing up for at&t next. Sure you pay a little more every month, but you pay $0 down and you end up paying less over time.
I made some correction, for less than 10GB mobile share plan,
If you go the subsidized route:
$199 iphone upgrade price
$12 up front tax (6% sales tax, for example)
$40 upgrade fee
$15 extra per month ($40 instead of $25, see above) x 24 months=$360
TOTAL $611
If you go the Next route:
$27.09 per month x 24 months=$650.16
no upgrade fee
no additional monthly cost per line
$39 up front tax (6% sales tax, for example)
TOTAL $689
Summary:
If you are using 10GB or more Mobile share plan, AT&T Next is cheaper.
If you are using 9GB or less Mobile share plan, 2 year contract is cheaper.
If you are using Family talk plan, 2 year contract is much cheaper.

and how it applies to my situation. my set up is currently this
-line 1 i pay 50 for the primary line + $20 data = roughly 70
-line 2 9.99 + $30 unlimited data = roughly 39
-line 3 9.99 + $15 data = roughly 25
total = roughly $135

we are paying about 65 for the data plan.
at $70 ---the next plan we would be sharing 4gb of data.
how again is at&t next saving me money? considering the phone itself would cost more under the at&t next package and considering i would be paying more $ for less data?

this calculator assumes a smartphone plan on a 2 year contract is $40 per line.where does this number come from?
im paying 40 on my 2nd line with unlimited data but 25 on my 3rd line.
both are on a 2 year contract plan

I couldn't see the value of the Next option in our case.
We have 2 lines w/ unlimited data on them (so far it's really been unlimited because we have never ever been throttled even though we both use more than 5GB / month)
W/ unlimited family text and our original family plan we end up paying $148 + tax ($160 total)
No matter how I crunched the numbers I couldn't find a better deal. So I paid $399 for the 6plus & $299 for my wife's iphone 6.
Maybe I'm missing something but even at&t rep over the phone told me I would pay more if I went with the Next option..

Yea, I think the rep said my bottom line would be around $210 or $220?
Basically in 6 months of having Next would already pay for the device upfront cost. (Or something like that) so to us it's a no-brainer to keep the 2yr contract. Plus I always prefer to have the non S models anyways
although, tell me this, if i upgrade my plan only right now to the 10gb, where all 3 phones are in contract/on contract still, do i get the $15 fee charge? i didn't think so but checking my account and options it list that fee.
obviously if i ever upgrade via 2 year contract after this i lose that $15 fee. if the answer is yes than i can currently save about $500 over 12 months. i upgrade via NEXT now and that goes down by that cost.

Wow using that calculator really helps. Looks like the difference for me would only be $50 over 2 years. I'll take that for the opportunity upgrade early (contract ends this December) and not have a contract. Thanks to whoever posted the link.
It is getting so old.
People will not take the time to read a few threads or explanations about how you can go with a LESS EXPENSIVE SERVICE PLAN that makes NEXT work out fine.
Buying a phone at full price isn't considered an upgrade... but sure, you can but a phone at full msrp the next year but that does not change the price of your monthly bill.

Not to mention you have the option of having the newest phone all the time because you can upgrade to the next phone every 12 months.
Once the 6s comes out I will be able to simply swap it for the new one and keep paying around the same monthly fee.
If you use the service right and take advantage of the features, you will be saving money and have more flexibility with phones than with a subsidized price and contract. Contract people will actually pay more and will be able to upgrade every 2 years at the very best.

How does my FAN discount play into next? Currently, I am receiving 20% off my bill and I'm on a shared family plan. Does NEXT apply the discount as well? My entire monthly recurring bill on a shared family plan with 3 iphones and 20% discount is $153 w/tax. Do you think Next can beat this price?

It isn't. Next is only a good deal for customers on the mobile share plans. For you it doesn't help.
what about converting existing Fam Talk plan with all phones in contract to NEXT. i assume you get the discounted smartphone fee now and keep it as long as you don't purchase a contract phone letter. i think i am saving lots if this is the case. much thanks to all you smart peeps.
