IMO the Daily was doomed to fail from the start. The concept was an iPad newspaper that was on a device that could easily access REAL newspapers. That's a toug sell and in the end the content simply isn't good enough.

the only thing I liked about the daily is that they let us sample it. I wish more magazine apps gave a few issues for free because so far I'm not convinced that I even want to read magazines on an ipad.

I think that The Daily was also priced right compared to what some magazines are trying to get. For example, The Daily charges $40 for a yearly subscription, while Time is charging $5 a week

The New York Times website. The CNN.com website. The USA Today free app.

I can't think of a single thing The Daily offers that I can't get in those three places any day of the week on my iPad. In my opinion those three things are all anyone needs for news on their iPad, and it's all free.

I agree with you.. at least on USA Today which has mostly fair non agenda based coverage. AP would be good too if they updated to iPad HD format.
"The Daily" App itself was terrible, and not ready when launched. The new version (at least for 24 hours) seems to be stable, but most people will not pay for a subscription unless it is really unique!

I wonder with this new version and the added horsepower of the iPad 2, if the app will be stable enough for me to actually use.

Don't underestimate the new OS 4.3 on an original iPad. There are tweaks to Java script etc. that many say speed things up. The rest of the code is left to the company that wrote "The Daily" App for NewsCorp...

I began a free 2-week trial on my iPad 1 today. The bones of the app look like they are good, nice graphics, some neat interactive features. Right now the content seems quite thin, most "articles" are less than one page. I began to sense some of Murdoch's right leaning in the article about President Obama resuming trials at Gitmo, inferring he went back on a campaign promise. The editorial was quite critical/negative towards the Democrats in the Wisconsin labor dispute. I will continue to pursue The Daily during my free trial and see if I find it useful, .99/week is not a terrible price, but I will need to see an improvement in quality of the content.

I was pleased with how it ran on my iPad 1, so maybe some of the bugs have been worked out.

The Daily is great for news about puppies and lottery winners, with the added bonus of having a glitchy and unintuitve interface. I never thought a news source could be fluffier than USA Today. The Daily makes Parade Magazine look like the National Review.

It did remind me a lot of USA Today with its short articles and glossing over the issues of the day, i.e. Libya was 10 or 15 pages into the paper today and it was about a 1.5 page (iPad in portrait) long article. I liked the "bones" of the app and am hoping for higher quality content.

The performance hiccups when hitting ads that lack in variety is just horrible. I am willing to give the interactive ads a try/impression, but the repetition and sluggish loading just make me scroll through the ad pages immediately. I doubt iPad 2 will alleviate the performance issues. Someone was able to replicate the same UI with solid 60FPS running on the same hardware. You'd think that they've got enough budget to either just hire the guy or quickly revamp the UI that's been trashed inside out.

I look forward to reading the Daily everyday and think the novelty of having an interactive "newspaper" is a fresh idea and worth the subscription. I actually read Foxnews everyday, and I don't think there is a very "foxnewsy" slant at all.

I recall paying $40 a quarter for my local newspaper and hated dealing with the recycling...$40 a year is very reasonable, and I don't have to deal with stacked up newspapers!

I didn't have much of a problem with lagginess, crashing, or the ads...I could easily skip past the ad page before it even opened, because it took a couple seconds to open versus the immediate loading of articles.

I'm usually quite the pessimist, so my optimistic view of the Daily is a surprise! :D

Alternatives?

I would love to read news articles from a respected source OFFLINE when I'm away from home. Are there any apps that could let me do that which are free or similarly cheap?

The user interface sucks bad. It doesn't maneuver around like an iPad app. It's laggy too.it feels more like an android app.

No crashes here, its just so so for me. With one day left in the trial, they extended it 30 days, I look at it a little, but i would never pay for it:eek:
I much prefer CNN on the iPad, viewing on the Mac gets you annoying commercials with every video, ( I am so friggin sick of Naomi Price)
Come on CNN, you that greedy?
