I was happy to hear about a native Translation app, but why is it so damn basic? No copy tool for copying translated text? No quick language switcher for going back and forth between two languages? I don't get it. Has no one at Apple ever used a translation app? Why would anyone use this instead of Google's?

Same reason that someone would use Apple Maps over Google maps

Odd, I can copy translated text. And what do you mean by "quick language switcher for going back and forth between two languages"? Do you want to translate the already translated text into another language?

I find it very useful on my watch

Also Siri on the watchOS seems more responsive than on any other apple products I have

Of course you can copy and paste text 😂😂

It’s a bit annoying how it doesn’t seem to auto detect very well or at all yet though.

I hate that you cannot just start typing and it will understand what language you are coming from. Often I start with German and then I am like damn it I need it in Spanish and then I need to go in and flip the toggle. If I have "English / German" enabled but I start writing "Dies ist ein ...." it should realise I am coming from German and auto switch to German / English and I also agree that it should have a quick "copy" icon.

I didn't say you couldn't copy and paste text. The point is that there's no quick "copy" option. Apple seems to think people who click into the translate box want to select only one word of it.

The first version of Google's Translation app, ~10 years ago, was better than this.

See the arrows here:

Very useful for going back and forth between two languages.

Give it some time, it'll get better. This is Apple's first iteration.

I like the automatic translation in Safari. Works really well from what I've seen.
Right, but how do they leave out key functionality that Google's has included for a decade? Apple's big thing used to be copying and improving their rivals' ideas. This app is little more than a placeholder.

It’s a first iteration by APPLE. what does it have to do with Google? It’s like the people moaning that the first iteration of photoshop on the iPad not been on par with the desktop version thats had 30 years of work on it.
Or the first version of iPados that’s not immediately as functional as macos.
Come on. Can’t you see reality? There is a reason the people creating these programmes are called developers. They need to develop things. Nothing straight off the bat will be the equivalent of a programme even a year older than the replication programme, yet alone ten years older.

This is silly. There's no excuse for basic features to be missing that Google's app had 10 years ago.

Yeah but there is an excuse. It’s not Google’s app. It’s Apples app and it’s the first version.
You may not like it- but that’s a different thing.

Apple probably haven’t been working on this for 10 years.

It’s like people expecting apple maps to be as good as or better than google maps on release. Totally unrealistic. It takes a long long time to refine these things. You’d end up not releasing anything if you had to wait until it was better than X.

I don't even know why you're comparing it with Google Translate. It's really bad. Try out deepl.com, it's so much better
