Also, what are the signs that the battery needs replacing?

Thanks

Getting 6-7 hrs of usage of great. Your battery does not need replacing at all. I get 7-8 hrs of usage on my iPhone 5 and my GPS is on/ in use all day by 2 weather apps(Dark Sky and Storm Shield).
When the battery starts to die quicker or gets below 2-3 hrs of usage is when I think it is time for a replacement.

You can probably tell i'm paranoid about battery life loool, i think Whatsapp is a massive battery killer

Owning 3 iPhones and I've never had a battery replaced within the 2 years I keep them. My iPhone 4S still gets 6-8 hours of usage. Honestly, don't worry about it until it doesn't last 3 hours.

Mine actually gets terrible battery life! I cant wait for an upgrade to 5S or 5C whatever the next model is.

Right now I have 4 hours 26 minutes usage and 1 day 6 hours standby with 37% left. I'd say for a 2 year old phone that's decent. 3G battery life is still just as bad as it was when I got it though. Probably a percent drop every 2 minutes during use.

My 4S is just over 18 months old and the battery has noticeably degraded.

It's amazing secondhand iPhones still command the money they do, but handy when I come to upgrade.

I get around 6-7 hours usage. I just plug it in when I can for that "just in case" situation. Had one recently and the battery died just when I needed it.

I replaced the battery in my 4S and its back to my normal 6-7 hours of usage.
