As long as it does not hinder my work.
1st gen: 1 year
2nd gen: 2 years
4th gen: since it came out

I bought a new IPad2 from Best Buy in July, 2011; traded-it-in at the MAC Store for a Refurbished Ipad2 for $108.00 in Feb.2013.

I use it mainly for Internet Radio and thinking of buying a Refurbished 32GB Ipad Air from the Mac Store during the next State of Florida Tax Free Weekend which I think will be in August, 2014.

This is my first iPad, but I'll definitely keep it at least for 2 years. After that I'll sell it and buy a new one once it gets really slow and laggy.

Bought ipad 3 when it first came out. Sold it when iPad mini came out. Sold iPad mini when iPad Air came out. Returned iPad Air for new iPad mini retina! eBay works great selling iPads! Don't have to spend much to get a new modle every year. Waiting to see what the new iPad Air 2 and mini 3 have.

I purchased the original iPad and used it for about two years or so. Once the retina iPad was released, I upgraded to that.

I use it for web browsing, email and reading so I don't find it necessary to upgrade as soon as the next model is released.

It really depends on your usage/needs, as far as I'm concerned.

I still have an iPad 1 which I just dug out of storage. My kids are loving it, so far. They have the Mini iPad but they're liking the larger tablet and so I let them use it for watching youtubes and what not

In our household, we have 2 original iPads, 1 iPad 2, 1 iPad mini retina and 1 iPad Air, all still in constant use.

So 4 years and counting I guess!

I'll be getting an iPad Air in the coming weeks which will make it 3 years in a row I've bought a new iPad. However I will be keeping the Air for longer than I have any previous iPad I've owned.

My first iPad was the third generation, which went to my wife when I got the fourth generation model (which I'm typing on now).

When the iPad Air is purchased my wife will get my fourth generation and the third generation will go to my Mother in Law who will use it to replace her (awful and slow) Archos Android tablet. My Father in Law has had his own iPad 2 for almost two years now and loves it, so now they'll both have iPads.

With the new lighter and smaller form factor I'm going to keep the iPad Air for longer. Hopefully the developers will make good use of the A7 going forward with the likes of the "Metal" api in iOS 8 so that games continue to look and play well.

My iPads are always kept in pristine condition so the people who get them when I upgrade always get a great deal, even more when it's free!

I upgrade for key features.
iPad2->4 : HD screen
iPad 4->Air: thinner design, processor power
I probably wouldn't have upgraded but the thin design was too alluring to pass up. (I use my ipad for most of my work load so the lighter design was REALLY what got me to upgrade)

I'll upgrade from my air when the ipad has 2 gigs of ram

Yeah, like my car, I bought it, and will use it til I feel that it's not safe/not logical to use it anymore.

I will use my iPad until it dies most likely.

Same here. Still have my iPad 1, although I don't use it as much because 5.x hobbled it. Still fine for email, some apps and one-tab browsing. Built like a tank, and the battery life is still boss.

Had my iPad 4 since December 2012, I may get a iPad Air 2 next year, but if my iPad 4 keeps going the way it is now? I may just keep it much longer, it has been rock solid so far and served me almost flawlessly, I don't see any point in replacing t right now.

If an iPad with more RAM comes out then I'll think harder about replacing my current iPad.

I'm on a two year trade in cycle for both my iPhone and iPad. I have them on opposite years and luckily when the most changes have happened. I.e. I got the iPhone 5 so will be getting one of the new iPhone 6's with the new design in the fall. I got the iPad Air last year and just love it.

I usually do my trade ins at Best Buy as they are easy to deal with and give decent values for your used electronics.

I do the same. It works out really well. This way I get one new piece of tech every year.

I bought an iPad 1 and then upgraded to iPad 2 soon after its release.
However, I've never upgraded since.

This is because I don't actually use my iPad for anything demanding or important (which is contrary to my initial expectations, and is unlike my laptop and phone). All I use it for is reading, web browsing, watching videos, and a few apps. So I have no plans to upgrade.

However, if Apple ever add an active digitiser to the iPad, I'll upgrade immediately and give it another go as a productivity tool.

I had the Ipad 1 for about a year and a half before it got stolen in a burglary, the insurance paid for an Ipad 4 a few months after it came out until now. Depending on reviews and others experience I am planning on updating to the new Ipad(I assume Air 2) later this year. O h and I've also had the Ipad Mini since launch not sure if I'll update that or not.

Original iPad 3G. 3rd generation iPad 3G (Retina!).

Since then, nothing has led me to want a new one enough to buy. Common cable would be nice, but not worth the money yet.

Of course, I didn't skimp when I bought the 3rd gen. I got the 64GB option.

I sell my iPad every year, I don't mind taking the $100-150 loss to upgrade yearly

I use the iPad more then my iMac so I want the latest

My wife and I both have the iPad 3 - the first for both of us. My kids also each have an iPad Mini. Since they all work perfectly fine, we have no reason to upgrade yet. If I were to venture a guess, we'll probably all upgrade in 2 years.
