I always upgrade before the applecare is up.

MacBooks generally keep their value. For instance, I bought my late 2013 rMBP 13" for £1000. I can easily get £750, for it now, and based on late 2012 13" rMBPS selling for around £650, I would say £350 to upgrade every 3 years isn't actually that bad.

5+ years. My current MBP is a mid-2010 one. Since my needs have changed as my career has advanced I am going to purchase an iMac in the near future. However, I will upgrade my MBP with a SSD too, because it is still a great machine!

I think the current generation MacBooks won't have an expected lifespan of more than 4-5 years at best, giving the impossibility to add more ram or replace the SSD included.

That's within my expected life time, but not fine for users that would like to keep it more than 5-6 years as some here.

I'm still running my mid-2009 white Macbook (upgraded to 4gb ram and 240gb SSD). While it's no rocketship like today's models... I still run Rapidweaver and Garageband on the Mac side and run my Celestron telescope programs on WindowsXp via bootcamp!
