It all depends on what is offered next. I have been very happy with my M1 MBA. It does everything I need it to do.
I'm still using a 2011 quad-core Mini as a backup machine for light tasks. I used the Catalina patch-upgrader to get some more life out of it in terms of software and security updates. My 2006 Mini still runs. It can't be updated anymore But it still works fines.
3 year rule depreciation.. must be ready..I bought a M1 Macbook Pro in April 512GB/8GB & I'm really happy with it ,but I only plan on keeping this for at least 2 to 3 years depending on how well the 8GB hold up in the future, also with it being 1st gen maybe is another good reason not to keep it longer than 3 years.
My next Macbook will more likely be based on the M3, which should be a significant upgrade over the M1.
So how long do you plan on keeping your M1 Mac's for?
Being first-gen is irrelevant. I would keep it until it feels slow or the new one has a killer feature, just like my 2014 13" MBP.I bought a M1 Macbook Pro in April 512GB/8GB & I'm really happy with it ,but I only plan on keeping this for at least 2 to 3 years depending on how well the 8GB hold up in the future, also with it being 1st gen maybe is another good reason not to keep it longer than 3 years.

Bought an M1 MBA at the end of November 2020, and I'll sell and upgrade the second we see the 14/16 MBPs.
So just replace the battery, pretty easy to do on the MBA and slightly more involved on the MBP.this computer will need a new battery in order to last over ten years.
You know once it expires you can still pay yearly for coverage. When AppleCare+ expires in 3 years.
