I bought at MBP 16 in 2020 and followed up with a MBP 13 M1 this year. I'm so happy with the 13 I rarely turn on the 16. Not only is faster, it's lighter and feels more like the laptop I wanted. I wanted the speed and power but not carry a large heavy laptop. I'll keep this wonderful gem for a long time. It's truly my favorite laptop of all time since I had older Macs. When they add new models I'll buy as needs arise. From here I'm looking for possible desktop options for my office or home.

Just ordered Mini 16/500. When the M1X comes out, I'll get a 32/500 or 1 TB and give my wife the M1 Mini to replace her old Intel Mini. I'm planning on getting a MacBook Pro as well; likely a 16 at this point.

I will add either a M1 Mini or 14" MBP when they have the next Mxx chips. My M1 Air has been great, but the next gen should be even better and I want more storage space and memory. The M1 Air moves to the recording studio were being fan-less will be great.

My 2006 Mini still runs. It can't be updated anymore But it still works fines.
I'm still using a 2011 quad-core Mini as a backup machine for light tasks. I used the Catalina patch-upgrader to get some more life out of it in terms of software and security updates.

I'm surprised that it's still quite useable. Nowhere near as fast as my new M1 Mini....but far from useless.

I'll keep my M1 Mini (16/512) as home desktop machine for at least 5 years, or even longer if it continues to run my required software adequately.

I plan on getting a second-generation Apple Silicon 14" MBP if and when it's overall performance is significantly greater (e.g. >50%) than a maxed out Intel MBP 16. Might not be the first generation....we'll see.

I bought a M1 Macbook Pro in April 512GB/8GB & I'm really happy with it ,but I only plan on keeping this for at least 2 to 3 years depending on how well the 8GB hold up in the future, also with it being 1st gen maybe is another good reason not to keep it longer than 3 years.

My next Macbook will more likely be based on the M3, which should be a significant upgrade over the M1.

So how long do you plan on keeping your M1 Mac's for?
3 year rule depreciation.. must be ready..

Looooooong time. It will not be my only computer, but as long as it can handle my workload I don't intent to replace it.

I have a M1 Mini, I will upgrade when I see the upgrade as meaningful.

My previous mac was an 27" iMac and I kept that for 7 years until M1 because the upgrades didn't feel meaningful until either no more OS upgrades or the AS release. In that particular case both came at the same time.

My previous Air lasted me from launch in 2013 until October last year. Might upgrade sooner this time but would depend on how much I can sell my M1 Air for in a couple of years. If it keeps its value pretty well I'll think about selling it and maybe picking up a new one in 2024 depending on what Apple does.

My plan was to keep my MBA M1 16/512 for at least 3 years and then probably give it to someone in the family.
But its my first 13" device and I'm still not shure whether this is really "my size". I'm also a bit disappointed by the keyboard. Otherwise it's a great device with excellent performance.

I see no point of upgrading my M1 iPad Pro for a long time. Unless Apple comes with something better than the Pro XDR display.

Being first-gen is irrelevant. I would keep it until it feels slow or the new one has a killer feature, just like my 2014 13" MBP.

Plan to buy a 16" coming up soon and probably intend to hold for 5-7 years. I don't anticipate any crazy laptop breakthroughs after this release. Maybe just a 15-20% performance increase per year, so 5 years would be a good time for roughly 2x the speed. Sellling at the 5-6 year mark is also not such a bad idea since it's around that time you might need a $150 (3rd party) - $200 (apple) battery replacement.

Things I might have some fomo about that may come out later:
- wi-fi 6e / 6ghz, seems unlikely to get in these models
- not sure how mini-led will hold up
- could see bigger igpu/graphics leaps
- move to 3nm and beyond will keep things even cooler

For a laptop, I probably care about that last bullet point (3nm) the most. Why? The current M1 macbook airs/pros are popular because they are so cool and quiet. I suspect the 14-16" models at higher thermal limits and more cores will be cooler than intel, but not nearly as cool as the MBA's since they simply have more power.

So, if a 16" 5nm model from 2021 runs at 30-45w, it might be pretty nice if 2025 models run at 15-30w ranges instead on improved lithography.

My macs have avg lifetimes of 7year
I usually use them for 2-3yrs, then they get handed down to the kids until either battery goes out or screens break.

Bought an M1 MBA at the end of November 2020, and I'll sell and upgrade the second we see the 14/16 MBPs.

Had I known it would have taken so long to get the 14/16's I would have done this as well. Could have just picked up a cheap base model and sale and resold it.

I am planing on keeping my 13 MBP for two to three years. My new M1 iMac will be replaced in 30 months. I don’t like using older hardware and this is the longest I would keep a computer.

Quite a while! It's incredibly fast. I can use adobe Lightroom without waiting excessively, I can play civilization 5 comfortably. 256gb/8gb here and I'm rather happy with it. MacBook Pro.

I was hoping for a 27" m1x iMac. When the 24" was announced, and it was the same computer as all the other m1 macs in different packages, I went for the m1 Mini and a 5K LG monitor. This way, when the m2 Mini is released, I can easily swap it in and still keep my 27" retina screen.

I have an M1 MBP 16GB and 1TB. The only thing I love about it is its incredible battery life and how cool it is. However, lack of software availability has crippled it. I am waiting for a Windows laptop to come with 20 hrs battery life and a good GPU that does not make the laptop an oven. It might take a couple of years. Given the first chance, I would jump back to Windows. Windows 11 really looks tempting compared to Monterey.
