Apple will increase it when they need another selling point for the iPhone

Yep... like 18W quick charger... They have a list of features (storage variations, display sizes) and depend of market (and sell numbers) they add them

And not only does 64 cost less, so they get more profit, if they keep it lower, more will go for level two at a massive profit for the extra memory that is dirt cheap compared to the price increase.

I obviously have no real way of knowing but people who are active on this and other forums are not the "normal" users. I would guess, however, not only are people interested in cheaper models but also really don't have a need for large storage models. At some point it won't save money in chip costs for smaller storage and thus the smallest model will get more storage.
I'd rather have more free iCloud storage than larger actual device storage

I would like to know who use a 512GB to the maximum :) And if subscribe a top icloud plan.

I mean if someone has a 300-400GB photos and videos and want it synced in icloud (or other cloud)
Or if you want to shoot a long 4K videos... or if you are moving in areas with bad cellular connection and want to have movies and music in local storage 🧐

This above and other personal content is why you'd want large iCloud (or other cloud) storage.

For this, you just need large local storage not iCloud. I've got a couple of 512GB iPads which are both 80% full but the iCloud backup for those are less than 5GB each. I'm personally using less than 100GB on a 200GB iCloud plan (inclusive of backups for decommissioned devices). My iCloud Photos is around 30GB. The rest of the content stored on the devices are comics, ebooks and videos I can redownload from comiXology, Amazon, Movies Anywhere, Netflix, Disney+, iTunes, Vudu, etc.

Mind, I keep 20% free because iCloud Photos syncing (Download and Keep Originals) doesn't sync properly if there's less free space.

As far as I am aware Apple has never introduce a Storage increase with new design. Storage increase are used for value increase marketing. So it happens ( or in all previous cases as I remember ) in a "S" or 2nd iteration releases.

Given mmWave and 5G are both slightly more expensive, and a new Design should give enough hype towards sales, there are very little incentive for Apple to upgrade the Storage.

I expect that is going to happen in 2021. iPhone 13 Pro Starts at 128GB. Along with may be Camera upgrade and etc.

2022 will be a notch-less iPhone. Enough to Drive another wave of Sales.
