How long does it take

I have started the upgrade, if you call it that, to High Seirra on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro I started it over an hour ago It showed it downloaded according to the screen, it rebooted, and required me to log in. After that All I have is a grey screen and an Apple in the middle of my screen.

No progress bar, no indication of install at all. Is this normal???

Not normal. Sounds like the install may be hung up. If your HDD is stock, the install will take a while (1.5 hours or so) provided it isn't hung up in limbo.
