SE/30 (1990) - had to replace the power supply at year 10, still runs for kicks and party tricks
Quadra (1994) - motherboard fried at year 4
Powerbook 1400 (1998)- sold to friend who is writing her novel on it as I write
iBook G4 (2004) - great little computer, but a bit slow. Lasted until I dropped it onto concrete. It still works, but you have to hold the powercord in place with your hand to get it to charge, which is rather inconvenient
MBP (2008) - still going :)

My macbook pro was replaced after sixteen months. I'm hoping the new one lasts significantly longer.

i have an original iMac from 1997 that is running perfectly fine so its around 12 years old, needs a RAM upgrade though 256mb isnt really enough!

had an old powerbook, took it apart and it stopped working

also had a 550, something like 15 years old.. i was forced to throw that out tho ;(

• dad's apple][ lasted a good 10 years
• dads ibook is 5 years old
• my mbp is going on 3 years old
• imac is nearly 2 years old

you take care of it and it will be fine!

Help me? T.T

I just got mine not long ago.. Everything was fine and fast.. But it seems to be getting slower and slower.. I just saved about 56 musics and about 1mb Documents.. and the boot up takes about 50 seconds.. It was only 10 secs last time T.T.. any idea what's wrong? Oh.. I'm using MacBook 13" (2.0ghz)

OMG not a slow startup time!!!!!!!

if you cant take care of your computer properly of course its going to slow down. start by repairing disk permissions, using the "Disk Utility" application. see how you go. then free up some hard drive space, or delete some stupid applications.

iMac G4 800 (flat panel) = 6.5 years (minimum)

My iMac G4 800 (flat panel) has lasted nearly 7 years so far. The HD recently suffered irreparable damage in the sectors where the system was stored, but I now continue to use it by running the system from an external HD. So now I can happily hobble along until the MBP 17" arrives ;).

I've followed every system upgrade with this thing until 10.4.11, and it has run fine for my needs; I haven't done much heavy processing, and for the rest it runs sweetly.

[I know an iMac isn't a laptop, but since many of the components are the same or similar, perhaps the info remains relevant.]

How long has my Mac lasted?

I too have an iMac G4 800 mhz, after only about 1 month the harddrive started making quite a loud spinning noise so I got it replaced under warranty. Since then though it has been faultless, I used it about 20 hours per week for 3.75 years. Then I bought my MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo, it hasn't let me down once. I gave it a RAM and hardrive upgrade since.

However, a week ago exactly I was really tired in the early hours of the morning and left my MBP (which was in a wetsuit case) on my car's roof while I was driving. It didn't fall off untill I did quite a sharp fast right turn at about 50 KMPH. The computer flung off my car onto a main road, I didn't know I had left it on my car until I got home (a 45 minute drive.) So I had to drive back only to find it hadn't been driven over, fhew, but it was warped and half the screen was kaput. But it still booted up! I can still use it, but only through the half screen So I can't really say it is dead, just need intensive care.

I can posted a picture for guys when I am next on my old iMac (on my girl friend's Compaq Presario notebook at the moment) if you want. Might upload a video to YouTube as well to prove how durable the MacBook Pro is (even before the uni body.)

Well here are my lot, and there still running

SE/30 - I was given this one in 2000, so i have had this for 9 years
Quadra 605 I was given this one in 2002 , so 7 years old
Mac Mini - Bought this one in 2005,
Powerbook G4 12 inch - Bought this one second hand in 2008
macbook (black) 13 - Bought this one in 2006, would have had this 3 years in september
Macbook Pro - Bought this one October last year and is my primary mac

I suppose I'm rather fortunate that I bought my Mac mini back in September '07, because it hasn't been updated in almost a year and a half. Probably the best longevity I've ever got in terms of a computer purchase remaining "fresh" for so long.

PowerBook Pismo - 4 years before sold (worked great)
PowerBook Ti - still tickin' (8 yrs), kind of (display is pretty much shot but works fine on VGA)
PowerBook 12" - (replaced the Pismo) - 4 years before sold (worked great when sold)
MacBook (C2D) - 6 months before sold (research grant funded an MBP replacement)
Mac Pro - still going strong (on 3rd year)
MacBook Pro (jul 2007) - damn thing kept dying
MacBook Pro (Nov 2008) - 0.16 years (but STILL going)

In short, I have so far not had the luxury of keeping old machines around too much - I get what I need out of them and then recycle them. But I plan on keeping this unibody around for awhile ... buying/selling a lot is too much of a hassle these days.

This is my first Mac. I have had only two issues (Fan and Logic Board) in almost the last 4 years. Both problems fixed by Apple on their dime (Apple Care). This thing is still going strong. Only real heavy app I run is WOW. But Office and Surfing are the what I use most. My PC (Dell) I thought was dying the other nite but just another Windoze glitch. But had my eye on a 24" IMAC I want to replace the Dell with. Oh well, will have to wait a little longer!

Bill....:apple:

25 years..lol
We still have the original 128K Macintosh and it still works.
My uncle has 2 Macs that are over 10 years old and they both work and he still uses them. One runs OS 7 and the other OS 8. I have only had a Mac for a year and a half but it still works like a champ. A MacBook pro could easily last you four or more years if taken care of....

I upgraded from a 4yo Powerbook which I was still using for graphic and webdesign. Only things I did to it were a new battery and faster drive. I'm sure the guy I sold it to will get many more years out of it considering he upgraded from a G3 iBook.

I'm surprised the hard drive survivied impact! consider yourself lucky;)
